E-mail from Jenni Smith's seven year-old grandson:

Hi Grandma,
On my birthday, can you make a big sweater? With long arms? My old sweaters are too little for me, but I want to wear them. I miss you, and I want to see you after you come home from Colorado. Grandpa--I want to go fishing with you next time we meet.
That's all.

I love you,
Arthur

  Featured Article

Is there copyright in a knitting technique?
No. A way of doing something is not protected by copyright. If it can be protected at all, it would have to be patented or treated as confidential information (a trade secret). If it is patented, then the patentee has the exclusive right to use the technique for a limited period of time, and may license others to use the technique. If it is a trade secret, only the recipients of the information are  bound to keep it secret; a third person who develops the technique herself is free to use it.

On the other hand, if a person has written down the instructions for executing this technique (such as in a handout or book), these written instructions may be protected by copyright. However, copyright in the written instructions cannot be used to stop someone else from using the technique, or teaching that technique, provided copyright in those written instructions is not infringed.

Can I make a working copy of the pattern I’m currently using, if I own a legal copy of the original?
You are allowed to engage in “fair dealing” with a copyrighted work. If you are using your working copy simply for your own personal reference, so you can mark it up and avoid damaging the original, then this is probably a fair dealing. This working copy should probably be discarded after use.

What if I borrowed the pattern from a friend or a library? Can I still make a working copy?
If you are making your working copy for the same purpose as in this question, then this is probably a fair dealing as well. This is not the same as if your my friend lent you the pattern so that you could make a “working copy” and return it right away, then lent the pattern out to another friend, who did the same thing, and then lent it to a third friend, and so on… in that case, the end result is several copies among this circle of friends. Those aren’t really “working copies” anymore,
are they? (taken from http://girlfromauntie.com/copyright)

Felted Clogs

Warm and cozy felted house clogs for everyone in the family – and guests too! Knit up several colorful pairs to keep by the door. Spice them up with novelty yarn around the cuff.

Note: This class is great for knitters to get the hang of following a pattern.

Skills: Students must know how to cast on, knit and purl.

Supplies: You will be knitting a pair of clogs to felt, for which you will need:
Pattern: Fiber Trends Felt Clogs pattern # AC-33
Yarn: A worsted-weight wool yarn that will felt easily. See your pattern for how much yarn you’ll need for the size you want to knit.
Needles: Circular needles, size 13, in both 16” and 24” lengths. You will also need a spare circular 24” needle in a smaller size.
Standard Knitting Supplies: Several split ring markers, a Post-It or two, blunt-tip darning needle, a row counter for circular needles, a pen/pencil and a copy of your pattern for you to write on.

Skills & techniques in this class:
Make 1
Wrap & Turn
Short rows
Changing colors and adding novelty yarn
Picking up stitches
Reading a pattern

Homework: Make a copy of your pattern so you can write on it and save your original for future pairs of clogs.

Knit Your First Sweater

In this class you will be knitting a pullover, long sleeve sweater from the neck down using circular needles. It is an uncomplicated, versatile design that you will be able to personalize as you choose.

Note: The pace and layout of the class require a significant amount of knitting between classes, which you can adjust considerably by the pattern you choose (see the Pattern section below).

Skills required: Students must know how to Cast On, Knit and Purl

Pattern: You have four choices, each requiring different amounts of knitting. If you have limited time to knit between classes you should consider knitting the Child’s, the Bulky or the Superbulky sweater.
All the patterns are by Knitting Pure & Simple
Child’s # 9730
Women’s Worsted #9724 (requires the most knitting)
Women’s Bulky # 992
Women’s Superbulky # 224

Supplies: You will be knitting a sweater in the round for which you will need:
Yarn: According to the pattern you choose
Needles: Multiple needles in the size needed to GET GAUGE in the pattern you choose. Refer to your pattern
Knitting Supplies:  stitch markers (4 of one color and 1 in a different color), split ring markers, blunt tip darning needle, spare yarn for holding live stitches, pencil, post-it for marking your place on the pattern, scissors, etc.

Skills & techniques covered in class: Two ways to cast on, knitting with live stitches, pick up & knit, increases and decreases. We’ll also cover how to customize your sleeve and body lengths, as well as edging possibilities.

Homework: You need to have your stitch gauge & needle size determined for the yarn you have chosen before you come to class. If you have questions around this you can refer to any of several books. One resource that explains gauge in detail is Sally Melville’s The Knit Stitch, on pages 135-138. Also The Knitters Companion. Lastly, make a copy of your pattern to scribble all over and save the original for future projects.
