  Animal or Vegetable

Natural fibers come in two flavors, those from our four-legged friends (do silkworms have legs?) and those from plants (cotton, linen, hemp, bamboo and soy). Most animal fibers are resilient, elastic and warm and are generally not machine washable. Vegetable fibers tend to be not very elastic, they wash well, grow softer over time and are durable.

How do you choose? How do you know the characteristics of each of the fibers? What will work best for your project and for your skill level?  Here’s a link to explain it all or at least give you a start at understanding the differences.

Coming Soon

coming soonFLAT FEET™ is the newest concept of sock knitting and we are very excited to be carrying this fun, exciting and truly individual yarn. A new concept in sock knitting? Yes! There are no skeins, no balls, no tangles--and it's portable. You simply unravel as you knit. DO NOT WIND THE FLAT INTO A BALL, knit as it is presented into the sock of your choice. It's creative, it's fun and it's easy. Because each flat is hand-painted, no other pair will match the flats; these are "art socks", one-of-a-kind. The unique color pattern develops as the flat is knit. It is literally a color transformation at the needle tip. Depending on the pattern selected, the colors may yield diagonal colors, slight striping, or even bold color. Uniquely, the colors in the blank will not disclose the final result of the sock; it only indicates the colors that will be found within the sock. Your needles drip color as you, the artist, create socks that are solely (no pun intended) your own

80% Superwash Merino/20% Nylon. Size 3 US needles recommended.

Design CollectionGathering Roses, Design Collection, Louisa Harding
This wonderful collection of 17 items to knit for women by knitwear designer Louisa Harding has patterns for extended bust sizes 32 to 42 inches. It features pullovers, cardigans, and vests in a variety of weights of yarn. The patterns are feminine and include a mixture of different stitches, color combinations, and added features, such as knitted flowers and embroidery.

AccessoriesGathering Roses, Accessories, Louisa Harding
This is Louisa’s first collection of yarns and hand knitwear designs that are symbiotic. The inspiration behind the selection of yarns for this collection was evoked by a memory triggered by her four year old daughter. She found her collecting fallen flower petals and putting them into a bowl, as a child, Louisa also gathered rose petals from her mother’s garden, put them into a large mixing bowl and marveled at the wonderful colors and textures. Flowers play an important part in the person who Louisa Harding is, they draw her with their colors, their shapes, their intricacies. She always like to be surrounded by them, a reminder of how clever nature is, the way it knits together many different elements to create one perfect bloom.

Summer ClassicsSummer Classics, Louisa Harding
Summer Classics offers twenty contemporary projects that will add a polished touch to casual looks. Silhouettes flatter the figure. Pullovers, cardigans and vests look fresh in crisp stripes or refined in cable and lace patterns. Many of the garments are knit in Jasmine, a new yarn from Louisa Harding that blends together cotton, bamboo and silk.

KintalongKnitalong: Celebrating the Tradition, Larissa Brown & Martin John Brown
At any given moment, tens of thousands of people are involved in knitalongs in places all over the world - many connected only by the silvery threads of the Internet. This is the only book that celebrates this phenomenon, and traces it back through years of tradition, community, and shared purpose. Read along as yesterday’s wartime Red Cross sock drives evolve into today’s meet-ups at locales as diverse as cafes, state fairs, and major league ballparks, as well as international online gatherings focused on patterns, yarns, and other themes.
This book presents an inspiring look at centuries of people knitting together, and why knitters find the interaction so meaningful and worthwhile. Along the way are 20 projects especially suited for different types of knitalongs and a DIY chapter about how to start your own knitalong, including tips from experts who have been there, done that.

Things LearnedThings I learned from Knitting, Stephanie Pearl-McPhee
The Yarn Harlot strikes again! Best-selling knitting author and humorist Stephanie Pearl-McPhee is back with an irresistible collection of witty observations on how knitting and life wisdom are spun together. In Things I Learned From Knitting (Whether I Wanted To or Not), Pearl Mc-Phee examines age-old aphorisms in light of knitting. From "Hope Springs Eternal" to "A Friend In Need Is A Friend Indeed" and "Birds Of A Feather Flock Together," Pearl-McPhee casts a fresh, off-beat light on these sayings. Presented in quick, punchy takes, each entry in this book calls out to be read aloud and shared with anyone who enjoys playing with yarn and needles.

Book of YarnKnitter's Book of Yarn, Clara Parkes
Not all yarns are alike. Some make our hearts and hands sing, some get the job done without much fanfare, and some cause nothing but frustration and disappointment. If only there were a way to read a skein and know how it would behave and what it wanted to become before you invested your time, energy, and money in it. Now there is! With The Knitter’s Book of Yarn, you’ll learn how to unleash your inner yarn whisperer. In these pages, Clara Parkes provides in-depth insight into a vast selection of yarns, giving you the inside stories behind the most common fiber types, preparations, spins, and ply combinations used by large-scale manufacturers and importers, medium-sized companies, boutique dye shops, community spinneries, and old-fashioned sheep farms. And, because we learn best by doing, Parkes went to some of the most creative and inquisitive design minds of the knitting world to provide a wide assortment of patterns created to highlight the qualities (and minimize the drawbacks) of specific types of yarns. The Knitter’s Book of Yarn will teach you everything you need to know about yarn: How it’s made, who makes it, how it gets to you, and what it longs to become.

FeltI Heart Felt, Kathleen Taylor
Eye-Popping Projects for the Inspired Knitter is a follow-up to the author's very successful first book on felting (Knit One, Felt Too), which was really meant as a beginner's guide. I Heart Felt will also be appropriate to newcomers in felting but it pushes the creative edges on just what you can do with felting, making for a hugely imaginative and engaging collection of 33 original designs--she experiments with felting textured knitting (cabled knits, for example), felting colored knitting (either combining yarns, including novelty yarns, for subtle or outrageously eye catching results or felting Fair Isle and other multicolored knitting), and embellishments, either worked directly into the knitting or added to the project post felting.

Fine FleeceA Fine Fleece, Lisa Lloyd
The pleasure of knitting can be that much greater when you know you’re using the perfect yarn. In A Fine Fleece, designer, knitter, and spinner Lisa Lloyd explores the different qualities of handspun yarn and presents projects that show them to their best advantage. There is valuable information here for every knitter, even if you’ve never considered learning to spin (though you may find inspiration in this book to do just that). While educating you on the differences in fibers (like Alpaca, Merino, Cormo, Rambouillet, and Suffolk) and the characteristics you can achieve in a handspun yarn by combining fibers according to certain recipes, Lisa Lloyd also shares the three important concepts that enlighten her designs: the use of contrasting color and fiber; scale and perspective (chunky yarns with chunky cable stitches versus chunky yarns with delicate ones); and the creation of “poetic” sweaters that try to capture an emotion. Each of the 26 projects in A Fine Fleece shows the finished project knitted in both a handspun yarn and a commercial yarn so that you can train your eye to understand how fiber and texture can truly transform a piece.

Start SpinningStart Spinning, Maggie Casey
For knitters, crocheters, and weavers ready to make their own yarn, this handy guide provides detailed instructions for spinning both on a spindle and a wheel, and offers a special section devoted to troubleshooting and wheel maintenance that keeps projects on track. It offers a comprehensive look at the various available fiber options, choosing and preparing each type of fiber for use, and crafting these materials into ready-to-work pieces. A final chapter on the various uses of spun yarn focuses on project planning, with definitions and context for measuring wraps per inch, determining yards for specific projects, and choosing a yarn size.

2 at a time socks2-at-a-time Socks, Melissa Morgan-Oakes
Sock knitters everywhere know the frustration of Second Sock Syndrome. It goes something like this: A cute new sock pattern and soft, foot-warming yarn lead to many happy knitting hours, resulting in . . . ONE sock. The first sock is done (and it's adorable!) but pattern distraction sets in. Who wants to knit the same project all over again? There are so many new projects waiting to be discovered. Melissa Morgan-Oakes ends the drudgery of the second sock by showing knitters how to cast on and knit two socks at one time on one long circular needle! Her method is captured in step-by-step photographs, clearly showing knitters how to turn out two socks at the same time. Goodbye to lonely, abandoned single socks. Hello to unlimited pretty pairs, knit on one needle (often finished on the same day), and worn with pride and that gratifying sense of accomplishment.

CablesCables Volume 1: The Basics, Janet Szabo
Knitting designer, author, and teacher Janet Szabo shares with you a wealth of information about basic cabling techniques, presented in a logical, easy-to-follow format. The book is divided into chapters based on the number of stitches in each cable- two, three, four, etc. and includes detailed, step-by-step photos to guide beginning cablers through the process. Intermediate knitters will love the nearly 150 cable stitch patterns presented in both charted and written form. And advanced cablers will find lots of ideas for using cables and creating brand new ones.
