Knitting for Our Neighbors in Need
We’re going to start supporting local charities by knitting hats, scarves, and mittens to give away. Every time you bring in a newly hand knit hat, scarf or pair of mittens to give away, Serendipity will add five points to your account. For the rest of February and March we’ll be donating any newly knit items to the Arkansas Valley Mission and the Street Church in Colorado Springs.  Watch for future scheduled get-togethers to knit for our and your favorite charities.

Serendipity Is Turning Three!   Cake
Can you believe it’s almost our 3rd birthday? Keep your eyes peeled for special sales and events during our birthday month of April. Because of our good fortune to be three in Chaffee County, we want to celebrate by selling chances to win three fabulous sample sweaters. All proceeds will go to the Chaffee County Mammography Fund and the Alliance Against Domestic Abuse in Salida. Stop in the store and watch the Chaffee County Times for all our special birthday events.

Looking for that one skein or special yarn to finish a project? Look no further than Serendipity. We network with yarn stores all over the country to find what you need. We are also happy to do special orders for you and ship your yarn to your door.

And don’t forget to register for your Wish list
…we keep a registry for birthdays, anniversaries, Valentines Day, Christmas, Hanukkah, any or no occasion at all. Come into the store and sign up. It’s easy to let others know what yarn, books, notions, or gift items are on your wish list.

Have you tried Soak? soak
Soak’s gentle formulation is perfect for hand-knits, raw fibers, spinning, even felting. With contemporary fragrances that smell great, and a no-rinse formulation that’s gentle enough for everything from cashmere and wool to cotton and silk, it’s exactly what you have been looking for. Great for washing quilts too- keeps unfinished projects from distorting and fraying.

Scrapbook/Card Supplies are here.
We now carry basic scrapbooking supplies, including papers, cutting tools, adhesives and we would be glad to special order

Can you help…
Teach knitting to a small group of children at the Boys and Girls Club in Buena Vista?  We will be gathering at the Avery Parsons Elementary School cafeteria each Monday and Thursday afternoon throughout the month of February from 4-5 p.m. All the supplies are provided and a small project is planned.  All we need are some extra pairs of hands to help the children. We are especially in need of extra hands on Thursdays, but would be happy with help on any Monday or Thursday. The dates are February 11,14,18,21,25 and 28.  Any combination of those days would be great. If anyone is interested, please call Marilyn Stokes at 395-9398.

KnitspeakKnitspeak, an A-Z Guide, Andrea Berman

Like a 24-hour help hotline, Knitspeak demystifies pattern language for knitters and gives them confidence to take on new projects. Designed for quick reference and sized to fit in every knitting bag. Knitspeak, a knitter’s dictionary, disentangles the mysteries of pattern language and translates it into plain English, helping knitters to easily transition from confused to confident. Andrea Berman Price’s essential guide—written in a friendly, reassuring tone and formatted for quick reference—begins with an overview of how knitting patterns are organized. It then offers a comprehensive alphabetical listing of all the abbreviations, words, phrases, and symbols typically encountered in patterns. Knitspeak’s many easy-to-understand drawings clarify basic and not-so-basic needle techniques, and a series of sidebars deals with issues ranging from keeping track of simultaneous shaping to substituting yarns and reading a yarn label. The book’s appendix is filled with valuable tips, charts, and worksheets.

Indigo KnitsIndigo Knits: The Quintessential Guide to Denim Yarn from the Founders of Artwork, Jane Gottelier

Indigo is one of the world’s most unusual and breathtaking dyes, and it has fascinated and frustrated artisans since its discovery. No two batches are quite alike, and on top of that, it fades, just like your favorite pair of jeans. Yet this unpredictability is what makes indigo dye unique and beautiful, and now knitters and crocheters are discovering the exciting design possibilities of working with indigo yarn. Organized according to various locales in Cornwall, England–from the fishing hub of Newlyn to the bustling town of Penzance–Indigo Knits offers more than 25 original patterns that capture the brilliant hues and equally colorful history of Cornwall. Whether it’s a Cornish Knit Frock, a Pirate-Striped Guernsey, or an Artist’s Waistcoat, there are denim designs for everyone. There’s also a section on washing, fading, distressing, and producing unique finishes on indigo knits, so that you can truly get to know this mercurial yarn.

Maybe you've found a yarn that would make a beautiful hat, and all you need are basic directions for shaping. Or maybe you've had your eye on a cute sweater in a store window and know that you can make a better version yourself—if you could only figure out the measurements. This handy guide demystifies all that knitting math and shows you how to knit custom-fitted, one-of-a-kind fashions that express your style. knitknitKnitKnit: Profiles + Projects from Knitting's New Wave, Sabrina Gschwandtner

All over North America and Europe, a brand-new generation has taken up knitting—and is transforming the venerable needlecraft by blurring the boundary between craft and art. In Copenhagen, Denmark, Isabel Berglund hand-knit an entire room. In New England, Dave Cole constructed an enormous “knitting machine” (he used excavators and utility poles) that knit an 800-stitch, 35-by-20-foot American flag. But the projects aren’t all of a monumental scale. In Los Angeles, Bridget Marrin knits little dollhouses—complete with lawns, shrubbery, and smoke-filled chimneys, all made of yarn. Using surgical wire, Indiana-based knitter Althea Merback hand-knits sweaters smaller than a dime.

Five years ago, Sabrina Gschwandtner founded a ’zine to tackle the blurry edge between craft and fine art. Now, her book KnitKnit brings together profiles of 27 of the most talented artist-crafters knitting today. But KnitKnit does more than just document their ingenious creations. Each of the profiled knitters has contributed a project—a sweatshirt kimono, a mohair and metal belt, a pair of high-heeled boots, a geodesic-patterned cap, even a teddy bear knit from fiberglass insulation—meant to inspire you to find and follow your own creative path.
